2009 A time for conservative perseverance:
Pluto makes a direct and long term ascent into conservative, structured Capricorn. Many conservative values and laws will become a central theme in this country and around the world. Since 1996 Pluto has been in Sagittarius which lessened the value of structure and accountability. Our drive for years has been escaping through whatever means it took.
Now expect our government and the governments of other nations to take a more responsible role. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) will make many profound changes on outward and inner levels. Our country a Cancer sun sign will also make many profound changes. America will start to do business differently becoming more shrewd in the process. Everyone will be searching to bring more stability into their lives including our government. This is a period of conservative correction. It will be powerful and last at least 10 years.
But as we focus on 2009 we will see our government adopt policies that worked before, this year will not seem particularly innovative but it will have a dominating urgency about it; issues must be undertaken and problems solved. Practical matters will dominate every sector of life; if it doesn't work it will be thrown out for something that does. This is not an overly sentimental year. It is also a year that we should not procrastinate; our country or its citizens. Take the bull by the horns and do what needs to be done! Don't wait for things to materialize if you need to do more tweaking; whether government, business, or personally, do what you can to make things happen.
Many things can become unearthed during Pluto transits; archeological finds may be great this year also expect things that have been hidden about governments, people in power and business to become public knowledge.
Capricorn is a karmic sign; which means it is concerned with the past and its effect on the future; during this time we will be more concerned with our actions and what effect those actions in the present will have on the future. That is why I believe we will be heading toward conservation and energy efficiency in the United States and throughout the world with fervor. As people turn away from practices that hurt the earth and themselves we will also start to think about our values. The collapse of stock markets, real estate and banking industries tells me that we are in need of spiritual uplifting and a new set of values. Major events in religion took place when Pluto was in Capricorn; the first Roman Pope headed the Catholic Church, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, Western and Eastern Orthodox Churches split; the Protestant Reformation of England split the Catholic Church again. Buddhism was also founded during Pluto in Capricorn transits. I feel that we will not be building more churches or creating more religions but we will be questioning whether or not our spiritual approaches to life are working; if our values equal our practices. Our government will be doing the same thing by questioning its current practices and seeing if these practices stay in keeping with our original constitution.
Our government will need to keep a sharp eye on countries around the world as political unrest and failing governments can become prey to conquest and wars. Peace keeping organization such as NATO and the United Nations will be instrumental for averting future confrontations. Ostracizing countries is not the answer to controlling them. Most conflicts will come from a lack of communication and the refusal to give in on small technicalities more than anything else. Obviously the way to avoid issues is to keep open dialogues and choose our battles carefully.
In the field of science and industry I expect this to be a major time of accomplishment. Hard work and efforts will bring forth major changes. The Industrial Revolution started when Pluto was in Capricorn; this time it will bring new industries concerned with green technology; creating things to use for green technology and also using green methods to manufacture. We will see great changes in how we view and treat common diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and aging.
In January 2009 Jupiter will be transiting our nation's Moon in Aquarius. This should lighten the mood of our nation and put an emphasis on our faith and charitable interests which bring help to others. Our focus will be more expansive towards business and as we get closer to April 2009 we should see an increase in jobs. Health care will become a major issue for our government to focus on and I do believe that a health care reform will be an important focal point in 2009. Americans will also focus more on their own individual health and take some positive action on a personal level.
As our nation has its next birthday (July 4, 2009) it will move into a more stable time. One which is about building foundations, businesses, though cautious will run more smoothly, the stock market will stabilize more, efficiency will become greater, restrictions and controls will be imposed.
With Neptune transiting the 10th house of the United States honor and integrity, status and credit power have been and will continue to be a challenge for us as a nation and its people. But with effort and the focus of President elect Obama we will strive towards more integrity and transparency which will change the current situations. Personally, we can certainly put our focus on what we need to correct as well which will help our country.
The transits of Saturn to our nation's Mars and Neptune will help us look at our actions as a nation; it will help us redefine our goals and dreams. We all need to look at this as well. Actions and right intention will be at the forefront of political endeavors now and this will bring about a renewed sense of optimism that things will change for the better.
Mercury will Retrograde (go backwards) three times in the New Year. This is not usually a cause for concern unless your Mercury is conjunct, squared, or opposing transiting Mercury. The first Retrograde will happen January 1 to 20 when Mercury will retrograde in Aquarius. As it keeps retrograding it will move into Capricorn from January 21 to 31. The second Retrograde will happen May 7 to 13 when Mercury will retrograde in Gemini. As it keeps retrograding it will move into Taurus from May 21 to 30. The third Retrograde will happen September 7 to 17 when Mercury will retrograde in Libra. As it keeps retrograding it will move into Virgo September 18 to 28.
As mentioned above Jupiter enters Aquarius January 6 and will be there all year; so all the Fixed Sun signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) will need to expand their viewpoints as will as focus of what really relates to their values at this time. It can be a great time to make changes that relate to your inner beliefs. Also the fixed signs will feel the need to reach out more to others and ask for help; this is a great thing since you are all so independent!
Saturn continues in Virgo until October 29. It will be retrograding from January 1 to May 16. This will have all the Mutable Sun signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) retracing their conversations, plans and desires. You will still need to figure out what you really think is important this year so make this your priority.
Uranus continues in Pisces until the end of 2009. It will be retrograding from July 1 to November 30. During this time all the Mutable Sun signs especially Pisces will need to look at their behavior in stressful situations. You may all find things changing suddenly or you may need to make changes in your life rather than coast along.
Neptune continues in Aquarius until the end of 2009. It will be retrograding from May 26 to November 26. This will be a time for all Fixed Sun signs to make careful decisions and communications. Have contracts looked over carefully by legal professionals. Don't make important commitments if things are really not right.
As we move forward into the New Year it is my hope that you will feel a sense of connection with others and when more fortunate you will lend a hand. I also hope you will feel more optimistic about your future. Have a healthy, happy New Year.

Where Is Our Nation Heading? The United States has always been a pioneering country. We are an innovative, independent people always striving to find a better way. As I have reviewed the birth chart of the United States (July 4, 1776) I am reminded that America has been first in many an endeavor, we have excelled in scientific, electronic, medical field and the like. We are always searching for answers and when we find something that works we jump on board with the new idea or gadget. Having a Cancer Sun Sign we are soft hearted sentimentalists in many ways. This is a blessing and a curse. We have often been duped by governments and their leaders or too involved with governments of other countries. We have thrown away millions and billions of dollars trying to buy loyalty and support from nations that do not deserve it. A Cancer Sun sign gives us the desire for friends and loyalty but we should remember that money cannot buy this for us. We have made many nations wealthy and powerful; and they have eliminated their connection to America in the long run.
We can no longer be governed by our emotions. The natal chart of America shows an Aquarian Moon which gives us the strong desire for brotherhood and a concern for all people. We are sensitive and have aided many people around the world who are facing injustices and disaster. In fact, many Americans have packed up and gone to places to volunteer when they have been strongly moved by some horrible circumstance whether at home or abroad. Since we are for the most part motivated by our genuine concerns this makes us a great nation.
Though now we need to turn our attention to our own lives, local community and country. We are going to need to rise to the challenges we face with persistence. This is a weak area for the United States, we start out with the greatest intentions, but having only one fixed planet, (the Moon in Aquarius); it can make it difficult for us to finish what we start. Just look at how many government projects, committees, bills, you name it; that take forever to finish or enact. We must work harder on a personal level not to be drawn in by superficial concerns which lead nowhere as we all work to change this; as we become more committed and follow through in our life we will see our government do the same. That is because the external circumstances in every situation is a reflection of internal intention therefore a nation in debt (external) creates a people in debt (internal).
As we move to embrace and attend to our local, city, and state government as well as our national government we will again start to become more connected to our country and this will help us see the big picture. It will also help politicians see that we are watching and concerned by our votes and simple activism. Today it is easier then ever before; with the internet to be involved in legislation and information as to what is going on. If you sign up for any group that takes action; some examples: the Sierra Club, Organic Consumers Association or Defenders of Wildlife; you can easily choose what organizations are right for you; you can with a click send your opinions off to your Congressman or Senator, etc. using a prewritten letter involving the topic. A little over ten years ago I became part of the Organic Consumers Association and we helped get 200,000 signatures, for a petition we filed against the FDA demanding that they not be allowed to use raw sewage on organic produce; all that was needed was 200,000 signatures on petitions to stop this horrible action and we stopped it! Without Organic Consumers Association newsletter no one would have known what was happening. This is only one of hundreds of successes that I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in.
Our nation has problems seeing things clearly, in the birth chart of the United States, Neptune squares Mars and Uranus. It affects our leaders as well as its people and at times we can act and react too quickly without getting all the facts. Just look at how many times our legislature has made the wrong decisions and found out contrary information after the fact. Our government has been unwilling or unable to control the pharmaceutical industry, financial industry, oil industry as well as many others which have caused the American people lots of difficulty. Again it is only through a persistent and involved people that true change is possible.
I have many friends and acquaintances that tell me the news is too depressing to watch; things have gotten this way because most people are disengaged, perhaps feeling either powerless or as though they will not really be affected; but obviously that is not the case. We need to stop watching reality shows and watch the news. It is our privilege and right to be involved. Politicians need to know what we want and that the office they are holding is not a cushion without responsibility. If even 30% of the population chose to send emails or made phone calls to their senators and congressmen with what they want, we would see a vast improvement in their performance. You can individually contact your mayor, congressmen, and senators and so on, by simply typing their name on a Google search. You should get their official website. Many have newsletters that can be directly emailed to you. If you don't have a computer you can get their local phone number for your area and voice your opinions to the aide answering the phone. All opinions are submitted to your representative.
This year as the United States had its birthday we entered into a year that has felt very scattered. It seems that so many things need our attention; it can be difficult to know where to focus our attention. We should try to have discussions with people we know, voice our opinions and ask our community leaders what we can do to help, since budgets cuts are inevitable. The overview of the world calls for new inventions, progressive plans and activities, exploration and creativity. Great strides forward and the start of changes, upheavals and opportunities are part of overall world changes now.
When Saturn entered the 5th house of the United States on September 21, 2008 this caused a downward spiral of the speculative markets.
When Saturn enters any house it forces us and also governments to take something seriously. We have all needed to look at our finances now. The government bail-out was an attempt to stem the tide but if the industry was regulated in the first place, betting on everything from mortgages to pork bellies would not have been an option, and the markets would have stabilized themselves. We are in a time in the United States that calls for prudence and clarifying what we value. Do we need three cars? Do we need a 4,000 square foot home or do we need peace of mind and connections with others? We will not feel a true stabilizing shift in the speculative markets until December 2011.
Transiting Jupiter is opposing our nations birth chart Jupiter. We have a need now to look back at our past; to retrace our steps and get clarity. In January 2009 Jupiter will be conjuncting our nation's Moon in Aquarius. This should lighten the mood of our nation and put an emphasis on our faith and charitable interests which bring help to others. As we get closer to April 2009 we should see an increase in jobs. Our country will be in a lighter stage and more focused on what really matters.

With Neptune transiting the 10th house of the United States our prestige in the world has been muddied. People in other places don't see us clearly or understand our motivations. We have lost our direction and this has complicated our infrastructure. We can not give aid to the world and not have decent school buildings; medical plans that do not take care of all Americans; homeless and hungry people; etc. It will take our country 10 years to change the view the world has of our government and its people. The best way for other nations to see our positive intentions is to work on our own nation and aid our own people and to cooperate with the United Nations.
The transits of Saturn to our country's Mars and Neptune will help us look at our actions as a nation; it will help us redefine our goals and dreams. We all need to look at this as well. When we do we will get back to an important understanding of why America was formed in the first place. Thomas Jefferson said, "Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the consent of the governed." "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness."
We all can affect positive change; consider your power in your own life, community and government. And please go out and vote on November 4, 2008.
